Human beings waste many things during the course of a day…week…month…and, over longer periods of time.  Some of us waste food.  Some of us waste electricity.  Some of us waste water.  The worst thing of all to waste is time.  Wasted time could equal a life of wasted potential.

There is nothing worse than wasting your potential– who and what you could have been.  In some cases, it might only take one choice or one decision to do it.  I have known people whose entire lives were changed that way.  Their potential is being wasted while they serve time in prison.  Worse than that, I have seen the potential of others get buried with them in a box six feet underground.

This is not to depress you, but rather to impress upon you how important it is to make the most of the minutes that you’re given every day.  Nobody gets shortchanged or cheated in this area.  Every one of us gets the same 24 hours (1,440 minutes / 86,000 seconds) in a day.  But not all of us use this time the same way.

Wasted potential doesn’t always happen with one choice or one decision.  For some people, it is a series of choices and decisions made over a longer period of time.  It happens to people who never set goals for themselves, who never try to make anything of themselves.  It happens to people who never learn to believe in themselves.

Experiences can be painful.  People can be cruel.  Disappointment can hit you hard.  This is life.  Nobody gets to escape those things.  Pressing forward is not always easy, but it is exactly what you must do.  This is one of the most important lessons that I have ever learned.

The work is for you to do, and pressing forward is only half of it.  You must never give up on yourself and your potential, even when it seems like others have.  It is especially important to hold onto it then.  Never let go of the belief that you can be and do more, and that there is something better for you to achieve.  That mindset will help you to press forward, even if it is only by taking one single step each day.  One step is better than taking none.

Your potential is first what you believe it to be.  Your potential becomes the actions you take.  Believing in your own potential takes work– more for some people than for others.  But it is work that all of us must do.  If you are reading this now, know that you have so much potential in you.  It really is unlimited.  Please do not let it go to waste.  Never junk your potential.
