Be Unlimited is taking a major stand against bullying. Our 3 On Bullying feature will appear on the last Friday of every month. Here, you’ll learn facts to keep you informed, skills to help you handle bullying situations, the support you need, and much more.
ONE: Using the Internet or other electronic devices to threaten someone or hurt them is known as cyber bullying. This type of bullying comes in many forms. Creating a webpage to make fun of someone, then spreading the link for other people to visit is cyber bullying. Sending threatening IM’s, e-mails, or text messages to someone is also cyber bullying. Unfortunately, Internet bullies are harder to catch. The appeal of cyber bullying is that the bully can remain anonymous, or unknown. Changes are soon to come. Many social networking sites are seeking ways to become more bully proof, and courts are looking for ways to punish cyber bullies.
TWO: 42 percent of young people have admitted to being targets of cyber bullying. Of those, 58 percent have not told their parents. If you or someone you know is being cyber bullied make sure to keep as much evidence as possible. E-mails, IM’s, or text messages should be saved and printed. Once you have the evidence, take it to your school’s principal or guidance counselor. In more serious cases, that evidence might even be taken to the police department, as many states have anti-bullying laws.
THREE: If you are the target of any kind of bullying, tell someone. Don’t be ashamed of what’s happening to you. You don’t deserve it. Speaking up is not a sign of weakness. Speaking up is a very brave thing for a target to do. This could also be the first step to resolving or ending their bullying situation. Teachers, principals, guidance counselors, family members, and close friends at school can all help stop bullying, but they need to know about it. Talk to someone you trust. They can offer helpful advice or suggestions. Even if other people can’t fix your situation right away, talking to someone will help you feel less alone.
