The dictionary defines the word ‘original’ in a few ways, but there are two definitions that best fit this lesson.
Original (adjective): 1) A person whose way of thinking is creative; 2) The genuine form of something.
A few years ago, I started a new hobby. One day I went to the art supplies store, brought a canvas, some paints, and brushes. What I didn’t have was a book for beginners, just the idea that I wanted to try something different. I wanted to paint. That’s exactly what I did. The goal wasn’t to see my art hanging on the wall of a gallery, and it wasn’t to have people tell me what a great artist I was. Those things didn’t matter.
Art is something that I’ve always been interested in and inspired by. From the art that I’d seen at museums and in books to inner city walls tagged with graffiti, I wanted to see what I could create. As a creative person, painting gave me another artistic outlet. That was the goal. Painting is something I did to express my originality. I still paint today.
Looking at one of my first paintings recently gave me the idea for this lesson. I created an abstract piece that is a one of a kind original. The way the colors blend. The way the lines intersect. The shapes they create. There are millions of abstract pieces in the world, but there isn’t one exactly like mine.
What you need to realize is that you too are an original. There is no one in the whole world exactly like you. Think about that. When you try to be like someone else, you’re not being an original at all.
Be Unlimited knows one definite way for you to express your originality.
Stay open to new things. This is not to say that you’re going to find inspiration in every new thing you experience. The important idea here is to give each new thing a fair chance to inspire you. The right fit will come along eventually. Discover what that might be.
As an original, you have something that other people don’t. Staying true to that can be challenging at times. Peer pressure can come in many forms. Sometimes people your age (and older) give in to peer pressure just to fit in.
Always remember that you are free to be who you are. You have a voice and it matters. Speak up. Keep a mind of your own. If you truly want to be an individual, then you must think for yourself. You get to decide how you will be an original.
If you’re reading this, you’ve already scored points for originality. Keep coming back for more. You really are unlimited!
